how to clean off butyl tape from headlights

1. I took apart my headlights, and am considering removing all of the glue and using Nissan Butyl Tape to reseal the headlights. I'd use what's already on the headlights, but this is the second time they have been opened (which worries me), and I will be dropping off the lenses to be buffed/polished and clear coated (so I don't want the glue to be in the way of the clear coat). Did a lot of searching online, and this seems to be the stuff to use.

2. retrofit source sells their own. i used it since it was cheap. make sure whe nyour using it to stretich it out and apply or else it wil lget messy whe nyou compress them together.

7. From what I've read, it's a stretchy/sticky rubber sealant that you line the channel of the headlight with, and when you warm it up it gets gooey and seals the light. I'll probably clamp my headlights, too, as I REEEEEALLY do not what to open them ever again... lol.

9. Just bought the butyl tape and 6000K 3Five bulbs for both my headlights and fog lights from Retrofit Source (used coupon code TRSFBLIKE and saved $5). Now I need to get the fog ballasts form DDM Tuning.

   Because I really just want to get it done the first time around. I'm enjoying the process, but will enjoy it even more when they are installed and I don't have to do it ever again. Will be doing fog lights, painting grill, and painting lower chrome trim on the bumper at the same time because I don't want the bumper to keep coming off the car. Makes me nervous haha.

10. Question: Once you guys close your headlights, do you run a bead of anything along the edge afterward just to make sure there isn't any moisture?

    I've never opened my lights, but when I do this sounds like a definite need to ensure a good reseal.

12. You shouldn't have to do anything other than making sure you get butyl sealant through the entire channel. Don't use silicone or anything like that. If you properly seal the channel, you shouldn't need anything else. Plus if you use silicone or anything like that, it will just make a mess. Put it this way, if it comes from the factory with just butyl, why would you add anything else?

    Yep, you shouldn't have to if this is the very first time. There enough butyl in the channel to seal it up tight at least two openings.

14. This is the second time the lights were opened, so that's why I added the butyl. I feel like the seal isn't as solid as the factory seal because both halves aren't completely flush with each other. I clamped the lights as they dried, but it seems almost impossible to get them to dry completely flush... which is why I was considering an extra bead of something. Thanks guys.

    You might of used too much butyl, you can stretch the butyl as your laying it in the channel to get the desired thickness. Try re-heating the headlight and press the two halves together some more, after you can use a blade to remove the excess.

16. Did you heat up the part with the channel and clean it out b4 you installed the butyl

17. I stretched it pretty thin beforehand. And I managed to get the housings and lenses flush with one another, but they just wouldn't stay that way. I'll try reheating it and squeezing it together some more. They're just super awkwardly shaped for clamping.

    I didn't. Figured it'd just be extra adhesive once it was warm. And I had a Hell of a time getting it off of the lenses, so i wasn't about to start that lol.

    I use paint thinner to clean the butyl off the lens.
